The “Joint Research Institute for Advanced Power Sources for Electric Vehicles (IAPS)" between Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) and Tsinghua University (THU) was established in 2010 in order to institutionalize the cooperation between TUM and THU in the area of Electromobility, and to bundle the corresponding activities in the different departments of the Universities. IAPS has built up a platform for networking between industry and research in China and Germany. In the IAPS, the joint activities range from fundamental scientific studies to system aspects and product development. A close collaboration with German and Chinese Industrial Partners has been also established from the beginning.

The following are the objectives of the IAPS project:
• Expansion of electric mobility activities of TUM in Asia- Pacific region
• Strengthening the internationalization of TUM in education and research to improve its competitiveness
• Thematic alignment with the research focus on electric mobility, divided into the areas of fundamentals, components and systems
• Profiting from the research activities of the two countries and pooling of know-how through joint research projects
• Future perspectives for a sustainable Sino-German knowledge sharing and synergy in the field of E-Mobility and development of innovative components and systems from the planned industrial cooperation with China-based German automotive suppliers and manufacturers and battery manufacturers and energy companies
• Buildup of an extensive strategic cooperation network between the universities and relevant industry partners in order to make a comprehensive transfer of transnational bilateral ideas and development possible .

On the German side, the IAPS is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the Program “Concept and Preparatory Measures of German Universities for the Establishment of Joint Research Structures with Partners in the Asia Pacific Research Area (APRA)”. On the Chinese side, a start-up financing was provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
